Massage information
if you are HIV + / Positive
Everyone can benefit from being touched, and a lot of guys with HIV don't get nearly enough intimate touch in their lives. Did you know that massage:
- Relieves pain
- Reduces stress
- Boosts immunity
- Reduces anxiety and depression
- Improves circulation
- Improves joint flexibility
- Lessens dependence on medication
Massage can help people living with HIV/AIDS. Massage Today reports on studies where hiv positive men who received a single "dose" of massage showed a boost in their immune system (CD4 counts) for up to 6 months to a year afterward. Men who received regular massages showed even more immune system benefits. They ultimately recommend 1 hour massages at least once or twice per week, and the massage should ideally include deep strokes, acupressure, or trigger point work for maximum immune system benefits.
According to The Body, massage can relieve the effects of neuropathy and diarrhea. Massage can also relieve muscle spasms, cramps, general body tension, edema, and inflammation.
A couple of caveats - Massage is great for increasing blood and lymph flow to help your body get rid of toxins. Toxin release can make you can feel funky though, so let your masseur know if you start to feel dizzy, nauseous, or lightheaded. Also, reschedule if your masseur is not feeling his best, you have to protect your own immune system.
Massage is usually only a bad idea if you have a rash, sores, lesions, or swelling, or if you are dealing with cancer or certain opportunistic infections. For a full list of contraindications, click here.
Immune system gains aside, the psychological benefits of massage can do a lot to help you cope with having HIV. Taking time out to completely relax and pamper yourself is important for everyone.
